The Gault&Millau Luxembourg chef of the year 2020 revealed

Gault&Millau, the restaurant guide publisher, unveiled the winners on Monday 21 October in its brand new edition of the Luxembourg 2020 guide. At the dawn of a new decade and the new roaring twenties, Gault&Millau has opened a new chapter and launched its independent guide to Luxembourg. This standalone guide, dubbed “A Taste of Luxembourg” is published in two languages, French and English. For this new edition, Gault&Millau has decided not to only focus on restaurants, brasseries and Pop addresses, but to include other addresses that have earned a rating because of their sheer dedication to our pleasure... “A Taste of Luxembourg” also lists the country’s best bars and chocolate makers. Available in all good bookstores from 22 October for €14.95

Luxembourg, 21 October - The Guide's management announced its winners and the results of the 2020 edition of the “A Taste of Luxembourg” Guide to an audience of journalists and curious restaurateurs. As the guide's reviewers had worked under their usual cloak of anonymity, the establishments were unaware that they had been inspected or selected before receiving the invitation for this Monday’s event. Restaurateurs from across the country could be spotted among the attendees.

All had come along to meet the editorial staff who unveiled their 2020 winners. This year, at the dawn of this new decade, Gault&Millau has “reshuffled the cards” and named Cyril Molard, chef and proprietor of the restaurant “Ma Langue Sourit” in Moutfort, as the first Chef of the Year of the decade.

The other winners were announced as Lady Jane for “Bar of the Year”, Pas Sage for “Pop of the Year”, Pierre Zhener (La Distillerie and Côté Cour) for “Pastry Chef of the Year”, Claude Rameau (Pefferkär) for “Sommelier of the Year”, Sébastien Périé (L'Atelier Windsor) for “Host of the Year”, Thomas and Emeline Murer (An der Villa) for “Remarkable Newcomer of the Year”, Giuseppe Molinaro (Tailor's Concept) for “Mediterranean of the Year” and Baptiste Heugens (Two6Two) for very first “Young Chef of the Year” in Luxembourg.

Succeeding last year’s personality of the year, Jean Kircher, the guide's editorial staff were eager to pay tribute to a figure who works on the fringes of gastronomy by providing high-quality solutions to a broader audience, and who has thrown herself into her project with great success and pugnacity: Stéphanie Jauquet, founder and owner of Cocottes, who recently moved into her brand new workshops in Grass, has been named “Personality of the Year 2020”. A fine example of how, through courage and determination, it is possible to climb from dishwasher to waitress, from waitress to restaurant owner, and from restaurant owner to a company with more than 180 employees while respecting the quality of the products.

Finally, thanks to the hard work of our reviewers, who once again assiduously tasted their way through Luxembourg this year, the guide boasts no fewer than 34 newcomers, including the first 18 “Best Bars”, 3 “Pop” addresses, and 10 “Restaurants”.

For the fourth time, Gault&Millau is also publishing its selection of the best chocolate makers. This year, anonymous tasters added to the 6 addresses that have already made a name for themselves in the Grand Duchy, and featured 3 new addresses for chocoholics and connoisseurs.

Gault&Millau also wanted to turn the spotlight on two key players within Luxembourg's gastronomic landscape, “La Provençale”, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and “Oberweis”, which is entering its 55th year. In our ephemeral world, where stars appear and disappear at an increasingly lighting pace, these truly exceptional performances by establishments that have stood the test of time are worthy of our respect,” commented Marc Declerck, CEO of Gault&Millau.

For the paper version, restaurateurs and other foodies will no longer have to wait for the release of the Belux Guide, scheduled for 4 November next in Lint (Belgium). Despite the foreseeable success of “A Taste of Luxembourg”, which has already pre-sold more than 6,000 guides, the volume of the Belux guide remains stable at 30,000 copies because, as Marc Declerck, CEO of Gault&Millau, confirms, “there is no cannibalization between the 2 editions, nor between the digital and paper editions. Requests continue to flow in from our partners hungry for copies of the customisable guide, which allows them to offer their customers a beautiful, useful and personalised gift in their company's colours. As for the bookshops, here again there are no reports of a drop in B-to-C sales since all the restaurant information, ratings and texts went online.”

This can be explained by the fact that the paper guide allows lovers of fine food to enjoy the process of selecting and planning their gastronomic outings, while the App is designed more for instant gratification.

The website is accessible at www.gaultmillau.lu and includes 126 restaurants, Pop addresses and Bars in Luxembourg selected on the basis of anonymous visits by inspectors who all pay their bills just like any other customer. The Belux guide, which includes more than 1,300 addresses, will be published on 4 November and will be available the next day in bookshops at a price of 29 euros. It can also be ordered on the website http://shop.gaultmillau.be.

The highlight of the evening was a gala dinner concocted by several leading Luxembourg-based chefs, which brought together 250 entrepreneurs, chefs and food-lovers from Luxembourg and abroad in the sumptuous surroundings of Hôtel Le Royal in Luxembourg.
